Once you have decided you want a mali uromastyx as a pet, you need to have everything ready before bringing him home. A proper habitat and all the foods needed for him to have a nutritious diet will help ensure you have a happy and healthy pet. Below is a list of all the items needed.
Habitat
A large terrarium or aquarium with a screened lid. The tank should be at least 4 to 5 times as long as your lizards body length and twice as wide as his body length. Always get the biggest cage possible.
A combination light fixture to house a UVB fluorescent bulb and incandescent bulbs.
A UVB fluorescent bulb. A bulb that extend the length of the tank work best.
A daylight basking bulb or heat emitter.
An under-tank heat pad that attaches to the outside bottom of the tank.
Substrate for the bottom of the tank. There should be enough so that it is several inches deep. Commercial play sand, reptile calcium sand, Eco-earth, or a combination of those all work well.
Hide areas, rocks for basking, and other decor. Half logs, caves, rocks, climbing areas, branches all make great additions to your pet’s home.
A food bowl for greens, veggies, and fruit. A second food bowl for birdseed.
Food & Supplements
Fresh greens and vegetables like mustard greens, dandelion leaves, romaine lettuce, collard greens, shredded carrots, squash, zucchini, bell peppers, green beans, and peas.
Fruits like strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, pears, peaches, grapes, apples, and raisins that can be used as treats.
Birdseed like millet and safflower.
A calcium and vitamin D3 supplement.
A reptile multi-vitamin supplement.
